About Penarth Belle Vue Bowling Club
PATRON – Mr Nick Osborne, Wasons Store.
Welcome to the Penarth Belle Vue Bowling Club, where the tradition of lawn bowling meets the camaraderie of community. Nestled in the heart of Penarth, our club has been a cornerstone of local leisure and sportsmanship for over 110 years.
Our History
Established in 1914, Penarth Belle Vue Bowling Club has a rich history rooted in the passion for the sport and the spirit of fellowship. Initially founded by a group of enthusiastic bowlers, our club has grown from humble beginnings to become a prominent fixture in the Penarth community.
Over the years, the club has witnessed countless memorable moments. Our members, past and present, have contributed to the vibrant tapestry of our club’s story, each adding their own unique chapter to our shared legacy.
In 1907 Penarth Council wanted a site for a bowling green. They looked at Alexandra Park but the topography made it unsuitable. The plot of land opposite the Council Offices, on Albert Road, formerly used as a quarry in the 1870’s and 1880’s, was seen as more suitable and the landowner, the Earl of Plymouth was approached with a view to purchasing the land for use as a site for the new bowling green and “recreational space”.
The Council agreed the purchase in July 1911.
A bowling green and pavilion, for use of the bowlers was to be provided. The bowling green was the site of the official opening on Saturday 22nd May 1915, and the first woods were bowled by the Town Surveyor Mr Edgar Evans, who had designed and laid out the Park, together with the contractor Mr Lewis.
The Ordinance Survey map of the area, in 1915, clearly shows the bowling green and the bowls pavilion.
The bowling green and pavilion were fundamental to the original existence of Belle Vue Gardens, later Belle Vue Park.
Penarth Belle Vue Bowling Club has, in recent years, offered free coaching (fully qualified coaches) and introduction sessions to people who want to give the game a try. The Bowling Club have supported Friends of Belle Vue with their events, including Music in the Park.
The Club has seen a renewed interest from the community and have already signed a number of new members in the last couple of months. This has revived the appreciation of the benefits playing bowls gives – mental and physical stimulation, with outdoor exercise that is therapeutic without being too strenuous, performed in an environment where Welsh Bowling Association rules/guidelines are adhered to. All ages and abilities are welcome.
One of the Clubs members, Janet Ackland, became the women’s singles bowls champion in December 1988, which was played in Auckland New Zealand.
Sadly with the pavilion being taken away from the Club, where the Council have now built a Community Centre, we are fighting to keep the club going. We are trying to raise money in order to keep the Club moving forward and looking to get suitable facilities for the Club. We are able to hire a room for match days which we have to pay for.
